WSP announces increased patrols for Winthrop Rhythm & Blues Festival

WINTHROP—The Washington State Patrol (WSP) announced plans for High-Visibility Enforcement (HiVE) patrols during the upcoming Rhythm & Blues Festival in Winthrop to reduce serious injury and fatality collisions.

From July 19 to July 21, WSP District 6 will partner with the Winthrop Marshal's Office for the fifth in a series of eight planned HiVE patrols. The operation will focus on driving behaviors that commonly lead to severe accidents.

"This festival will bring thousands of folks into the Methow Valley. We want people to come and enjoy the festival while feeling they're safe," said WSP Public Information Officer Trooper Jeremy Weber.

The HiVE patrols use agency data to strategically deploy resources at optimal times and locations. Additional units, including K-9 troopers and the Aggressive Driving Apprehension Team (ADAT), will participate in the effort.

WSP Okanogan Sergeant Lex Lindquist emphasized that the patrols will target a range of dangerous driving behaviors, not just impaired driving. Officers will also watch for electronic device use and seatbelt violations.

The increased enforcement is part of a broader initiative to enhance road safety during large events. Updates on the patrol's progress will be shared on WSP District 6's social media platforms.

The Rhythm & Blues Festival, a popular annual event in the scenic Methow Valley, typically draws significant crowds to Winthrop.
