Rapidly growing Easy Fire burns 300 acres in Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, firefighters face challenging conditions

MAZAMA - A rapidly growing wildfire in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has burned over 300 acres since it was ignited by lightning on July 17. The Easy Fire, located 18 air miles west of Mazama, is currently 0% contained due to extreme weather conditions and rugged terrain.

Firefighters have been battling the blaze since it began, reporting explosive fire growth and running crown fire. Weeks of extreme temperatures and record dry conditions have made containment efforts challenging, with no road access to the area. "Our goal is to stop any new growth on the Easy Fire, but this is a really rough spot," said Chris Furr, Methow Valley District Ranger for the Forest Service. "Another day of low humidity, extreme heat, and dangerous ground conditions isn't going to help."

Fire managers are utilizing a combination of ground crews and air resources to establish containment lines and cool off hotspots. However, the steep terrain limits the effectiveness of air tankers, and the dense timber makes it difficult for retardant to reach the ground. "This is just a nasty piece of ground for ground and air resources," added Furr. "In this first 24 hours we're going to look at every option, every tool, we have to safety corral this thing but we're also bracing for the long-haul."

Air resource advisors anticipate persistent smoke to remain at Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups levels, with periods of Unhealthy to Very Unhealthy possible during evening hours in the greater Methow Valley area. The Pacific Crest Trail in the Easy Pass/Rainy Pass area and the Heather Maple Pass Trail are closed due to the fire.

No structures or homes are currently threatened, and no evacuations have been ordered at this time. The cause of the Easy Fire has been attributed to lightning, and a total of 35 personnel are currently assigned to the incident.
