Skippers meet for Brewster Salmon Derby orientation

Posted

BREWSTER—The mandatory skippers meeting, which precedes the start of the 18th annual Brewster King Salmon Derby, was held at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 1, in Columbia Cove Park.

Under near triple-digit temperatures, the helmsmen picked up their skipper packets, including boat markers and wrist bands, bought raffle tickets, purchased derby T-shirts, entered side pots, and listened to derby rules.

Two wardens from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife answered questions and explained this year’s boundary line: Pelican Point, on the east side of the popular Brewster Pool, is off-limits for king salmon, and the western boundary is the Bridge Street Bridge.

On-site vendors include Costa Sunglasses, P1FCU, Rustic Rise Café & Bakery, Brewster Bait & Tackle, and Maria’s (Mexican food).

Derby organizer Mike Mauk said an estimated 135 tickets have been purchased for this year’s scramble after the prize fish.
