Rabid bat found at Chelan RV park

EAST WENATCHEE — Health officials have issued an alert after confirming a rabid bat was discovered at a popular camping destination in Chelan County, potentially exposing visitors to the deadly virus.

The Chelan-Douglas Health District (CDHD) announced that a sick bat found on Saturday, August 24, at the Lake Shore RV Park in Chelan has tested positive for rabies. The test results were confirmed on August 27.

"If you, your children, or your pets had contact with a bat in this area, seek medical care and call your local public health district," the CDHD warned in a news release.

The infected bat was discovered by campers who alerted public health authorities. It remains unclear if the bat was present at the RV park before August 24.

This incident marks the second confirmed case of rabies in a bat in Chelan County this year. Health officials stress the urgency of immediate medical attention following potential exposure.

"Rabies is a fatal disease in both animals and humans," the health district stated. "Infection and death is preventable if appropriate medical care is received immediately after a rabies exposure."

The CDHD has reiterated guidelines for public safety, emphasizing the importance of observing wildlife from a distance and never handling bats with bare hands.

"Do not touch or handle a wild animal, especially bats," the health district advised. "Teach your children never to touch or handle bats, even dead ones."

Health officials urge anyone who may have had physical contact with a bat at the Lake Shore RV Park to contact their local public health district and seek immediate medical attention.

As the situation develops, the Chelan-Douglas Health District continues to monitor rabies activity in the region and promote public safety measures to minimize the risk of human exposure to the virus.
