BREWSTER – At precisely 9:11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, a small group of citizens gathered at the memorial in Legion Park to observe the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center towers in New York City.

On that day more than two decades ago, terrorists hijacked four passenger jets and turned them into flying bombs in what would become the worst attack of its kind on American soil in the nation’s history.

The timeline of events that unfolded on that day included:

  • 8:46 a.m. Flight 11, a Boeing 767 with 87 passengers and crew, crashed into the north WTC tower.
  • 9:03 a.m. Flight 175, a Boeing 767 carrying 65 passengers and crew, crashed into the south WTC tower.
  • 9:37 a.m. Flight 77, a Boeing 757 with 64 passengers and crew, slammed into the western side of the Pentagon.
  • 10:03 a.m. Flight 93, a Boeing 757 with 44 passengers and crew, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, as passengers attempted to regain control of the plane. It is suspected that the intended destination was the U.S. Capitol or White House.

“I just thought the community should do something to observe that day,” Hurtado said earlier as he worked to bring citizens together for the brief ceremony.
