WSP intensifies traffic enforcement for Omak Stampede

Posted

OKANOGAN COUNTY — The Washington State Patrol (WSP) announced plans for increased traffic enforcement during the upcoming Omak Stampede, a popular event expected to draw thousands of visitors to Okanogan County.

From August 8 to August 11, WSP's District 6 will conduct a High Visibility Enforcement (HiVE) patrol, focusing on reducing serious injury and fatal collisions. Troopers will target speeding, aggressive driving, use of electronic devices, and unsafe passing maneuvers. Seatbelt enforcement will be a priority, as half of the district's fatal collisions involve unrestrained occupants.

The Omak Stampede, a regional tradition since 1933, features a concert, PRCA rodeo, the world-famous Suicide Horse Race, parade, art shows, carnival, and dancing.

"We want people to come and enjoy the Stampede but make good driving decisions traveling to and from," said WSP Public Information Officer Trooper Jeremy Weber. "This will be a good event to have a High Visibility Enforcement patrol."

The operation will deploy additional resources, including K-9 units, the Aggressive Driving Apprehension Team, and allied agencies. WSP will use data-driven strategies to effectively position officers.

Updates on the enforcement efforts will be shared on WSP District 6's social media platforms. The increased patrols seek to ensure public safety while maintaining the longstanding event's celebratory spirit.
