Firefighters work to contain Gold Creek blaze

Posted

CARLTON – The latest news from the Gold Creek wildfire south of Carlton indicates crews may soon have the situation under control.

Fire crews hope to contain the 275-plus acres blaze today and “continue to burn out unburned vegetation, weather and fuel permitting,” according to a new release from Incident Commander Shawn Soliday.

“Firefighters will continue to mop up the fire focusing around structures and the fire perimeter,” the release said.

The equipment-caused fire was reported at 4:46 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, and has burned about 277 acres in steep and rugged terrain. Resources dispatched to control the blaze include 10 engines, six hand crews, three dozers, and two water tenders.

A Level 2 evacuation was issued for area residents meaning a significant danger was threatening, that people should pack emergency items and remain aware of developments. That has since been reduced to Level 1 for Gold Creek, South Fork, and Middle Fork roads. Residents are cautioned to have an evacuation plan, have emergency supplies ready in a safe location, and monitor news reports for updates.

Access is closed at Gold Creek Loop Road according to Okanogan County Emergency Management. Access via Gold Creel, South Fork, and Middle Fork roads is open to local residents only.

Brewster School Superintendent Lynnette Blackburn said the school has provided a site for the Department of Natural Resources local operations.

“DNR set up base headquarters at our high school due to fires in the Methow,” said Blackburn. “They have used our facilities in the past.”
