Campfire restrictions take effect June 13 for Okanogan–Wenatchee National Forest

Posted

WENATCHEE — The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions effective June 13th, limiting campfires to designated, developed recreation sites and specific Wilderness Areas. This is due to dry forest conditions caused by limited spring rains and recent hot weather, leading to increased fire danger and local/national fire activity.

Stage 1 Fire Restrictions prohibit the following:

  • Building fires (including charcoal) outside designated campgrounds with Forest Service fire rings/grills.
  • Smoking outside enclosed vehicles/buildings, designated campgrounds, or areas cleared of combustible materials (3 ft diameter).
  • Off-road motor vehicle use, except minimal travel to access dispersed camping.
  • Violating state fire laws.
  • Fireworks are always prohibited.

Allowed activities under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions include:

  • Campfires in established rings/grills at designated sites.
  • Campfires in designated Wilderness Areas (excluding year-round restriction locations).
  • Pressurized liquid fuel stoves/lanterns with immediate shut-off, used in cleared areas (3 ft radius).
  • Recreational shooting, where permitted.

Exemptions apply to certain permitted sites like group camps and summer homes. For complete details, including designated site lists and exemptions, visit http://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/okanogan-wenatchee and click on the Alerts and Fire Danger tab.
