BREWSTER - Marsenia Wilkus, emergency department supervisor and trauma program manager at Three Rivers Hospital, has been appointed by the Washington State Department of Health to be the Okanogan County hospital representative on the North Central Emergency Care Council.

The North Central Region EMS and Trauma Care Council is a non-profit corporation established in 1991, working with the Washington State Department of Health and regional healthcare partners to ensure the continuation of the Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Care system in local communities.

Wilkus has been nurse for 30 years, beginning her career as an LPN at the Mid Valley Hospital emergency department. She continued her education at Pacific Lutheran University, receiving her RN, BSN degree. Wilkus worked at several west coast hospitals, including Children's and Marybridge, before becoming the cardiac and stroke coordinator, trauma program manager and ED supervisor at Three Rivers Hospital in 2012.

"She gives us representation for Okanogan County on a North Central Washington Board.," said Tonya Vallance, North Central Emergency Care Council executive board chair and EMS director for Douglas Okanogan County Fire District 15.

According to Wilkus, her term runs through Sept. 30, 2015.

"As a regional committee member, I am expected to have an active involvement on a state level with awareness of state issues for the EMS and Trauma Care System," she said. "I will be expected to commit five to 10 hours monthly to regional workshops, committee meetings and work groups. I feel privileged to have an active part in my community and will do my best to represent the hospitals in our region well with a commitment. As for Three Rivers Hospital, this will keep us up to date with the latest changes in emergency and trauma care and can only help us to improve in our policies and procedures for the benefit of our community and individual patients."

In other hospital news, April Vanscoy is a new certified registered nurse anesthetist.

A nurse anesthetist, or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), is a licensed professional nurse who provides the same anesthesia services as an anesthesiologist (MD).

Vanscoy has been a CRNA for over 20 years. She attended Ohio University for her undergraduate work and graduated from the Anesthesia School at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. For the last nine years she has worked as a locum tenens in several states, including New Mexico, Oregon, Wyoming and Washington.

She and her husband, Jeff Smith, are renting a home in Brewster, with eventual plans to buy property and build.

When asked why she wanted to work at Three Rivers Hospital, Vanscoy said, "I want to put away my suitcase and stop traveling for the next several years. I was born in a small town and like the variety of a solo practice."
