Pateros volleyball senior team members EmmaLee Luft (L) and Kerlyn Heen (R) work on team return drills during practice held at Brewster High School.
The television cameras and news crews have long since gone, but life in a small town goes on with things like apple pie, fishing, and, of course, community sports.

Annual Fishing Derby a success
The Brewster King Salmon Derby is in the books for 2014 as the young and old took to their boats and tried as they might to catch the biggest fish Friday through Sunday, Aug. 1-3.

This year's Brewster King Salmon Derby winner took home the title in two categories: the overall derby winner and the youth winner. Wiley Flohr caught an impressive 24.97-lb fish for the win in two categories. Wiley earned $600 for his catch of the weekend. For more photos and results of the ninth-annual derby, see page 8 of this week's printed edition of the Quad City Herald.

Bearacudas host final championship meet in Omak
The league championship meet was held July 26, in Omak.

The Brewster Bearacudas were hosts this year, but Omak was gracious enough to let us use their pool for the meet since ours was not usable (full of ash, in process of being cleaned).

Though it would have been easier to just cancel the meet for this year, we all felt our kids needed it as a celebration of our strength and resilience.
