Saucedo makes diving catch for Mustang victory

John F. Cleveland II

The Bridgeport Mustangs baseball team came through with an 11-10 victory over the Oroville Hornets last Friday afternoon at Oroville.

"It was an outstanding game - there were five lead changes," said Kyle Krustangel, Bridgeport baseball coach. "We have come a long way since Feb. 27. The kids have worked hard and have shown a lot of improvement."

"We scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take an 11-9 lead, they scored one run in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases. Oroville hit a fly ball past first base and Kenny (Saucedo) made a diving full-extension catch to save the tying and winning runs from scoring. We had outstanding pitching from Rafa (Cruz) and Conastantino (Martinez). We consistently got runners on base every inning and also had 12 stolen bases. The difference in my eyes was our bottom of the order was getting on base and that got rid of their starting pitcher early."

Rafa Cruz started the game on the mound for Bridgeport and went four and two-third innings and gave up seven hits, three walks and struck out seven batters. Constantino Martinez pitched the final two and one-thirds and gave up five hits, two walks and struck out two batters.

Mike Garza was 2-3 with three stolen bases; Kenny Saucedo was 2-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases; Michael Powell was 1-4; Cameron Cavadini was 2-4; Cruz was 1-3 with a home run; David Shumate was 2-4; Jeffrey Lopez was 2-3.
